Chapter Twenty-Five

“We’ve got shooters coming up the stairs and the elevator,” Tim Dupont announced to Ryan Weller, as he came out of his bedroom, pushing his arms through the shoulder straps of a black backpack.

“Are they here for us?” Ryan asked.

“I can’t think of any other reason why ten thugs with guns would be entering this building.”

“Another kidnapping?” Ryan suggested.

Dupont opened a pantry cabinet beside the refrigerator and pulled out two black plastic cases. Setting them both on the table, he said, “Get those open.” Then he reached in again and withdrew a small but heavy black bag.

Ryan flipped open the lids of the plastic cases to find CZ Scorpion EVO 3 pistol caliber carbines with folding braces and threaded barrels. He picked one up and began screwing on the suppressor he found in the case, then he jammed home a loaded magazine he’d retrieved from Dupont’s black bag as Dupont readied his weapon.

“Got any body armor in there?” Ryan asked.

“Just the guns.” Dupont racked a nine-millimeter round into the weapon’s chamber.

“How do you want to do this?”

Dupont grinned. “Got a time machine?”

Ryan wondered how much experience Dupont had with close quarters combat. He knew most FBI agents came from local police forces, trained at Quantico, and had to meet shooting proficiency standards every year, but the vast majority of agents rarely drew their weapons. He felt he needed to take the lead since his experience in dealing with shitheads rated him as team leader of his own squad of private military contractors. The best scenario was to block the stairwell and take the shooters in groups. If they had to fight off both squads in the apartment, their chances of survival dropped to near zero.

“What else do you have in there?” Ryan asked, going to the cabinet. They needed to get moving. Time was of the essence. He wanted to be on the offensive and not give the gunmen a chance to rock him and Dupont back on their heels any more than they already had.

Finding a coil of rope, Ryan headed for the apartment door. He paused before entering the hallway, ensured it was clear, then sprinted to the stairwell. Fortunately, building codes were nonexistent in Haiti. Instead of the typical crash bar found on stairwell doors in the U.S., there was a lever-style door handle. Looping one end of the rope around the handle, Ryan quickly tied a bowline knot. He ran the rope to the nearest apartment door, looped the free end of the line around it, and hauled the line tight before tying another knot, effectively locking the door to prevent the shooters from coming through.

Now all they had to do was wait for the group in the elevator to arrive. The light above Elevator Two showed it was steadily moving upward and was only two floors below them.

Across from the bank of two elevators was a blank wall adorned with a garish picture of brightly colored boats on a beach above a small table set with a flower-filled vase.
